When NJG 1 was established with
Hauptmann W. Falck as commander he brought along the crest (Wappen) of
his old unit I./ZG 1 : a lightning striking at the British Isles along
with a diving falcon. The crest was designed by Hptm. Viktor Mölders (the younger brother of Werner Mölders) during a competition in I./ZG 1. |
Destroyer Squadron 76 (Zerstörergeschwader 76 / ZG 76) was formed in May 1939. In June 1940 the squadron was disbanded again. In January 1942 the squadron was reorganized. In July 1944 the squadron was disbanded again and the individual groups were reorganized into fighter groups with single-engine fighters.
Night Fighter Wing 1 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 / NJG 1) was the Luftwaffe's first dedicated night fighter squadron. It was formed from 22 June 1940 in response to the British night raids on Reich territory.
Night Fighter Wing 2 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 2 / NJG 2) was formed from 1 September 1940 for long-distance night fighters.
Night Fighter Wing 3 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 3 / NJG 3) was formed on 1 October 1940 and deployed in the Reich Air Defense over northern Germany.
Night Fighter Wing 4 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 4 / NJG 4) was set up in Metz (France) on 18 April 1941. The unit's objective was to counter the RAF Bomber Command's strategic night bombing offensive.
Night Fighter Wing 5 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 5 / NJG 5) was formed 30 September 1942.
Night Fighter Wing 6 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 6 / NJG 6) was formed in May 1943 and was used exclusively in the Reich Air Defense.
Night Fighter Wing 100 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 100 / NJG 100) was formed 1 August 1943 and consisted of independent groups that were not led by a higher headquarter.
Night Fighter Wing 101 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 101 / NJG 101) was formed on 20 March 1943 from Night Fighter School 1 in Schleissheim.
Night Fighter Wing 102 (Nachtjagdgeschwader 102 / NJG 102) was formed on 15 December 1943.
The 1st Night Fighter School (Nachtjagdschule 1 / NJS 1) was formed on 16 September 1941 in Schleißheim near Munich by renaming the 1st Destroyer School. On 20 March 1943, the 1st Night Fighter School was renamed the 101st Night Fighter Squadron. |
