22-Nov-41 : Killed In Action while traveling as a passenger in He111H-6 "1G+BT" of 9./KG 27 "Boelcke" from Chaplinka, in the region of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, to Germany to attend the funeral of German aviator and aircraft engineer and manufacturer Ernst Udet who passed away (suicide) on November 17. En route, the left engine failed and the pilots decided to divert to Breslau Airport. On approach to Breslau-Schöngarten airfield (now Strachowice airport, near Wroclaw, Poland) the right engine failed as well. The aircraft stalled and crashed in a field. Mölders died due to a broken back and crushed rib cage. The pilot, Oberleutnant Georg Kolbe, and the flight engineer, Oberfeldwebel Hobble, were also killed. Mölder’s adjutant, Major Dr. Paul Wenzel, and the radio operator, Oberfeldwebel Arthur Tenz, survived the crash landing. Dr. Wenzel sustained a broken arm and leg as well as a concussion, and Tenz a broken ankle. Accident investigators then and since have speculated whether Mölders would have survived the crash if he had used his seat belt.
28-Nov-41 : State funeral at the Reichsluftministerium in Berlin. His coffin was laid out in the honour court of the Imperial Air Ministry. The guard of honour consisted of Major Johannes Schalk, Oberstleutnant Günther Lützow, Major Walter Oesau, Hauptmann Joachim Müncheberg, General der Jagdflieger Adolf Galland, Oberst Wolfgang Falck, Oberst Herbert Kaminski and Hauptmann Karl-Gottfried Nordmann. Mölders was buried next to Ernst Udet and Manfred von Richthofen at the Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin. The 8.8 cm flak in Berlin Tiergarten fired a salute; Generalfeldmarschall Hermann Göring gave the eulogy.
